Monroe was born in Westmoreland county Virginia to planter class family before attending William and Mary. While in Williamsburg studying the law, Monroe would enlist into the 3d Virginia Regt. to join the fight for independence. He would see action in New York, cross the Delaware scouting for Washington, receive a life threatening wound at Trenton, and recover before spending the harsh winter of 1778 at Valley Forge where he became the aide de camp to Lord Sterling. As his service neared its end, and he returned to Virginia to recruit more troops, his studies resumed under the guidance of Virginia's new Governor Jefferson. His friendship with Jefferson would eventually lead him to settle in Albemarle county from where he would pursue political service which would cast him into a plethora of public offices including the presidency.
